Vimshottari Mahadasha and Antardasha
An important steps of predicting future in Indian astrology is the vimshottari Mahadasha system. In this method, a person's life is calculated for 120 years. This entire 120 years are ruled by different planets. If the stating mahadasha is Ketu then the sequence of these vimshottari Mahadashas is: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury.
The duration of each Mahadasha is different.The first vimshottari Mahadasha is calculated based on the position of the Moon at the time of birth. The planet ruling the nakshatra in which the Moon is located, rules the first Mahadasha. Then the planet ruling the next nakshatra rules the next Mahadasha. In this way, Mahadashas are calculated sequentially up to 120 years cycle.
Each mahadasha further divided into Antardashas. Each Mahadasha is again divided into smaller periods, which are called Antardashas. These Antardashas are also ruled by specific planets. The order of the inner states is: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury.
